For the annotated bibliography, you will document three articles originally published in academic journals that
you will access via the databases JSTOR, Project MUSE and Academic OneFile which are each available to us
via the Truxal Library website. You will need to read the articles that you find, so that you can capture their gist
and determine whether or not you will continue to work with them on your research paper. The annotated
bibliography should present the three best articles, in your estimation, that you have found, in terms of their
potential helpfulness to your project. You may list your sources according to whatever logic seems best to you,
perhaps starting with the best article and discussing complementary articles one after another. After each
bibliography entry, in proper MLA format, you will compose a one-paragraph annotation that describes that
particular scholar’s attitude on American imperialism — see the example and use it as a model. You will want to
consider questions such as the following Does this scholar have a positive or negative opinion on America’s
conduct as an empire? What anxieties about American imperialism are presented in this article? Is empire being
used as a metaphor, or as a straightforward description of the state of affairs? On the research paper itself, you
will need to quote from and properly cite five articles originally published in academic journals that you will
access via the databases JSTOR, Project MUSE, or Academic OneFile, which are available as subscriptions by
subscription though the Truxal Library website, using in-text citations as prescribed by the MLA, and documented
on a works cited page. Books, or book chapters or essays collected in books (appropriately documented as such)
are also acceptable sources, if they are substantial academic texts. Note that despite the annotated bibliography,
you will still need to append a Works Cited page at the end of the research paper, and that you may need to
continue researching after submitting your annotated bibliography.
